LOCAL Rabbi pleads guilty, walks free JACQUI GAL
AFTER pleading guilty to assault in the Waverley Local Court last Thursday, Sydney Rabbi Elozer Gestetner was dismissed without a conviction, penalty or criminal record.
The Coogee Synagogue rabbi was granted a section 10 dismissal by Magistrate Deborah Sweeney, after she reviewed more than 100 positive character references in Rabbi Gestener’s defence.
Under the Crimes Act, judges may dismiss a guilty person by noting their good character, community standing and other factors.
Last week, Rabbi Gestetner took out an advertisement in the AJN, in which he “publicly” apologised for the “unfortunate incident that occurred” between him and his brother-in-law, Rabbi Dovid Slavin, the executive director of the Yeshiva Rabbinical College.
“It was wrong to strike out,” Rabbi Gestetner said. “I am sorry for the hurt that I have caused him.”
