Keep your distance, magistrate orders rabbi

SYDNEY’S Rabbi Elozer Gestetner was ordered to keep a five-metre distance from his brother-in-law, Rabbi Dovid Slavin, last week.

The order, made in Sydney’s Waverley Local Court, also prohibited Coogee shul’s Rabbi Gestetner from coming in contact with Rabbi Slavin’s home and the Yeshiva Centre in Bondi, where Rabbi Slavin is executive director.

Previously, Rabbi Gestetner had been cleared of criminal charges for an assault on Rabbi Slavin outside the Yeshiva Centre on February 23. Rabbi Slavin spent a week in hospital with head injuries following the incident.

Because the case was dismissed without a conviction, an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) was not automatically issued.

However, under instructions from Rabbi Slavin, police prosecutors initiated proceedings to secure an AVO, which was granted despite an advertisement taken out by Rabbi Gestetner in the Sydney edition of the AJN (22/5), apologising to Rabbi Slavin for the incident.
