JACQUI GAL

A SYDNEY rabbi faced Waverley Local Court last week charged with assault.

Rabbi Elozer Gestetner of Coogee Synagogue is accused of attacking his brother-in-law, Rabbi Dovid Slavin, who was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital following the incident on February 23.

Yeshiva Centre company secretary Henry Kinstlinger confirmed to the AJN this week that Rabbi Slavin was attacked outside the Yeshiva Synagogue on Flood Street.

Although he said he was not present at the time of the incident, Kinstlinger said he had reviewed it on surveillance tapes.

Rabbi Slavin is executive director of the Yeshiva Rabbinical College. His wife, Laya Slavin, is the sister of Rabbi Gestetner’s wife Miri.

Rabbis scuffle in Australia

A fistfight outside an Australian synagogue resulted in one rabbi being hospitalized and the other charged with assault.
Rabbi Dovid Slavin, executive director of the Sydney Yeshiva Rabbinical College, was knocked unconscious after falling backwards. His alleged assailant is his brother-in-law, Rabbi Elazer Gestetner, who heads the congregation at the Sydney beachside suburb of Coogee. It is understood the fight broke out following an argument over the administration of the yeshiva.

Slavin spent a week in the hospital while Gestetner appeared in a local court, where he will face charges.
